Ring, Ring

My cell phone shows two messages and I ponder who has called me while I am trapped in the call center tonight. Is it a long lost friend? Is it the man of my dreams? Is it someone calling to tell me I've won the sweepstakes and I don't have to work anymore?

Or is it my mother?

Tonight, as usual, it is my mom.

I love my mom, I do. I really, really do. I just have to say her messages are, in a word, strange.

Case in point:

Message #1:

Turkey! Hi! It's me. The garage door broke and I know you don't live here anymore and don't use the garage anyway, but I thought you should know. Chip is a good boy. Mac likes tuna. He's the tuna eating cat! [This last phrase is done in a sing song voice.] Taco had poop on his butt. Bye!

My mom knew I was at work. She knew I wouldn't be answering the phone. She planned this message!

Message #2:

Hi! Me again. I know you're at work but I just wanted to tell you I'm grateful I didn't name you Veronica. Bye!

What???

Obviously, the logical part of my thought process is from my dad.

I'm trying not to laugh out loud because Keem is sleeping & has already yelled at me for typing too loudly. Well, not yelled exactly. Used her disapproving voice.

Anyway, oh, this is so great. I loved it. It does open the question "Why is she glad she didn't name you Veronica?"

Inquiring minds want to know.

But Veronica is a GREAT name. I once had an imaginary sister and I named her Veronica. Of course she died in a horrific car accident with my other two imaginary siblings, Simon and I can't remember, but I loved her all the same.

Third and final post of the night

Politics and The Words [Arguments] of the Masses

In the past week, I've been paying close attention to the reaction of Americans and the election results. I have heard some, what word do I want to use here?, illogical arguments. I'm not trying to bash Republicans here in any way and I'll admit, I've heard a few Democrats speaking "Conspiracy Theory". The thing is, the election is over. We have George W. Bush as President of the United States for another four years. Public opinion aside, he's still in charge. I may not like it, but that's still the fact.

Does that mean the voices of the masses should go unheard? No way. I think people still should voice their opinions, their ideas, and their dreams. That's what this country is made of.

I have heard, however, a couple of odd phrases and arguments.

From the single mother who voted for Bush. Context: She was asked why she voted for Bush.
"These past four years have been hard. I have so many bills and I'm barely making enough money to cover them. I need more time off from work and I need a raise."
Person questioning her, "What does that have to do with Bush?"
"It's not NABABNA's fault I don't get paid enough [she works for the bank]. It's the current administration's."
Person questioning her again, "So you still voted for Bush, even though you blame him?"
"Yes. I'm not going to convince you I see."

What???

From the devoted Democrat:
"You know what happened don't you? The exit polls showed that Kerry won. They're 90% accurate. I knew this would happen. It's all because of his family. It's a conspiracy."

Well, there's a great argument. You've convinced me. [Sarcasm is hard when in print.]

What about actually saying something? Something meaningful, something substantial? Does that exist?

If someone had asked the single mother why she voted for Bush and she replied, "I'm pro-life" or "I believe in this war" or "I think he's done a good job with the economy" or even "I like his turn of phrase" (okay, that last one's a joke), I could understand why she voted the way she did. With her answer, I wonder about how much brain-washing she's been under. She has no clue why she chose who she did.

For the devoted Democrat (I just like the ring to that), if when asked about the election results (which he actually brought up in conversation because he knows I'm liberal and it seemed safe) he had said, "Did you see this fact?" or "I'm still bothered because I am pro-choice and worried about women's rights" or "I understand the facts about these events and I am worried because [insert an actual argument here]" I would get it. I have met a lot of people quick to jump on the conspiracy theory wagon.

I've said before that I'm liberal. That doesn't mean I like Michael Moore or that I buy into celebrity endorsements for one candidate over another. I'm liberal because I am pro-choice. I'm liberal because I believe that all human beings deserve the same rights. I'm liberal because I want to see all minorities treated like the majority. I'm liberal because I believe in helping people get the same chances. I'm not saying that we should give away free money, but I am saying that I'd be afraid of any country to abolish all forms of welfare and goodwill (the system does need reforms and checks and balances but it does help some people get back on their feet). I believe that different backgrounds help create better ideas and better working groups. In the sense of the economy, I'm more middle of the road.

I think in the future, democracy will evolve. Democracy is not the end all solution. As time progresses, things do change and things need to change to remain relevant.

So either side of the argument, please just make your argument concrete. Make it mean something. Don't just speak to hear your own voice, think about what you're saying. Voice your opinion, please just know what your opinion is.

This is interesting. The single mother blames the current administration but yet votes for the people she blames. The devoted Democrat can only say that there's a conspiracy but can't back it up. Hmm.

Here's why I voted for Kerry. I support gay rights. Kerry, while he is against gay marriage, is also against a gay marriage ban and supports civil unions. Bush, as we all know, is screamingly against gay marriage and wants to pass the gay marriage ban ammendment. Since I was brought up to believe that everyone should be treated the same, regardless of color, creed, religion and sexual preference, that goes against my beliefs. Kerry won my vote. It was that simple.

I thought it was funny that on the post I had written about my concerns, I was told that I shouldn't listen to Michael Moore. The thing is, I don't. I never saw Fahrenheit 9/11 and I probably never will. I didn't listen to anyone except the candidates and made my decision based on what they said. Bush is against gay marriage. Kerry is for civil unions. Kerry won my vote. Because sometimes you don't always get exactly what you want but you hope that it will work out for the best.

I really liked this post, Beth. I'm sure there will be a few people that think otherwise.

yes. This is a good post. I thought nothing could possibly be more fascinating than the campaigns, but it seems that the post-election banter is at least as interesting, if not more.
An interesting thing to me is that we all seem to be in such a bubble that we truly think that everyone who feels differently than we do are just some tiny, insignificant group that makes a lot of noise. But I think everyone saw this fallacy as a result of the elections. Gay rights are not supported only by homosexuals, nor are they rejected only by right wing fundamentalist Christians.
I would think that all this revelation would cause us to view each other a bit more broadly rather than compartmentalize and stereotype everyone into a convenient record store category bin. But then I read that special squeaky wheel groups are fundraising and re-grouping to try and make America all about their ONE issue and influence the outcome of 2008. Enter Jerry Falwell and the moral majority. geez. have we not learned anything?

I especially liked this post as well Little Sister, it does say a lot for the thought processes of some of the people out there. I am still baffled at what the single mother said, and I am especially intrigued at the arguing tactic of the devout democrat. If you are going to argue a point, have some facts to back it up. Not just some really intresting sound bite, and as far as the single mother complaining about not having any money because of the current administration, and then voting for the same exact administration, all I can say is this: Thanks for the wasted vote. Because of more peopl like her and the fact that most people did not pay close attention and have a care about the way the country is running, look what happens. We have another four years of the same damn thing. I am so thrilled (yes that was sarcasam.) Oh well, hopefully more people will have learned a lesson by this and 2008 will be a better election year. Let me hang onto that small glimmer of hope, please, it is the only thing that will make the rest of the four years bearable.

Quotes

I found some interesting quotes recently and I wanted to share them. I don't agree with all of them, I am posting them without the person for a reason. I'd like to know which quotes people identify with. Comments are more than welcome. If you know who said each quote, please feel free to email them to me separately. Thank you.

You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy.

Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.

Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.

America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense human rights invented America.

You can tell a lot about a fellow's character by his way of eating jellybeans.

The white, the Hispanic, the black, the Arab, the Jew, the woman, the Native American, the small farmer, the businessperson, the environmentalist, the peace activist, the young, the old, the lesbian, the gay and the disabled make up the American quilt.

The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one.

Delay is preferable to error.

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.

Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up.

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

Words build bridges into unexplored regions.

The final thought: Does the person saying it make it more or less powerful? Would that change your opinion of any of these quotes?

The authors (speakers) will be added in one week.

I particularly like the one about America & human rights, the American quilt, this one "Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up" and "Words build bridges into unexplored regions."

I have no clue who said them so I don't know if it would make it more powerful or not. I suppose if one of these quotes that I like was by Hitler then I wouldn't be so thrilled. But then again, I really can't see Hitler wanting to help people.

I liked the quotes quite a bit you know. I really did like the fact that you were able to find a quote that summarizes, in a small way, what the blogger world is all about. (Word build bridges into unexplored regions) If not for words we all would not have discovered such a unique, and fascinating way, of meeting new people. I also liked the quote about the "American quilt", that is very good, and should be used more where the mass public could see it. (i.e. commercials, billboards, etc.) I also enjoyed the crazy quote, because, as you and anyone that has read my blog can see for themselves, I am crazy. And the speaker of that quote is correct, it used to be a big deal, but it really is not anymore.
I will see you later Little Sister,

Brilliant

Brilliant, just bloody brilliant.

On my lunch (dinner) break at work tonight, I called Scott and talked with him for a half hour. That's it. I just talked to him. I am stunned each and every time I talk to Scott to hear how much a wonderful human being he is, how intelligent he is, and how much he thinks.

While on another topic (parents and such), Scott said something that resonated in me.

He said, "Love is not conditional." Is this a new saying? No. It's not.

I've heard this before and it hit me harder tonight than any time in my past. I started thinking about a situation I have going on and it helped clear my head.

Scott's phrase solved something in my crazy thought process and it helps me deal with the problem (or lack of the problem) that's been going on.

Okay, super quick synopsis of the problem: I have not talked to a certain friend of mine in over three weeks. This may not seem like a long time to most but in the context of this friendship, it is a long time. This is a person I used to spend 15 hours a day with. I built a lot of my life around this friendship and to not have it in the forefront has bothered me. What especially bothered me was to not even get a hello, an email, or a phone call for my birthday. Written here, it seems trivial. And it is. There is a whole history of discounting and differing opinions of friendship with this person and so it was the "final straw". Yeah, right.

Trying to end a friendship is hard. It's not hard to end the friendship itself, but it's very hard to come to a conclusion about whether or not one wants to end a meaningful part of their life just because of an emotion called hurt.

I don't want to end the friendship at all. I want it back. It means that much to me. So I allow myself to get hurt over and over again. Why am I hurt? Because I have higher expectations of friendship and I thought the friendship was worth so much more.

I love this friend. He's like family. He's like a brother to me. I want this friendship. I enjoy his company. I just have doubts on whether or not he likes my friendship. That's where it hurts. I don't feel valued in the friendship and I wonder if I'm making a fool out of myself, working for something that is not two-way. I love him in the same way I love Dana, Keem, Matt, and Scott.

He's someone that I want at my wedding (someday in the far-off future). I want to be there when he gets married (and he deserves to get married just as much as any heterosexual does!). I want to watch his children grow up and share hopes and dreams with him as we have in the past. I want my best friend back.

And I wonder if he wants the same.

So when Scott said, "Love is not conditional" I thought about friendship. Friendship is a form of love. It is. Friends are the family you get to pick. I believe that in my soul. I think circles of friends are more important than minor acquaintances.

And my circle will get smaller if he's not in it. And that hurts too.

I get angry at him when I get hurt. I get mad at myself for letting myself get hurt. And yet, I still WANT this person in my life. To have him so distant from me hurts. And saying goodbye hurts even more.

So friendship is unconditional too. It's hard to go into something saying nothing will bother you. The actions do bother me, but I still love him as a person. I still want to know him as a friend. I guess I'm saying I don't want to end the friendship. I don't know how to mend it anymore, I lost all grips on that a long time ago. I wonder if it's beyond repair. I hope not. I know I can't go on being the only contributor to the friendship, but I'm not asking for too much, am I? I just want to spend time together a little more often. Hey, we work together. Is it too much to ask for five minutes of one's day to chat? Those five minutes mean the world to me.

Sorry for the tangent tonight. I guess I just wanted to say that Scott is brilliant and I am thankful to have him in my life. He's amazing and I want to spend more time with him too.

First off, I read the 1st sentence and SERIOUSLY thought I'd landed in my blog. Am I infecting you??? PELASE SAY YES. It would make me soooo cool!

Now. I am sorry you are going through that. It was one of the toughest things in getting older, the filtering of friendships. I have been meaning tow rite a post abt that, the circles of friendship for the longest time but haven't got round to it yet. Beth, it is NO small thing, no way. Someone who is lucky to be your friend IRL and doesn't use the chance? I don't know. I don't know what is going on but this much I've learned. We can deal with all losses. I've lost 2 very good friends. One of them was like a sister (they're both still alive, it's not that). And life goes on and I often still miss what we had but if I'm not valued, if they have what you'd call unrsolved isssues, I'm very unwilling to pay the price. I know what I am worth. I have loads of faults God knows but I am loyal. Someone hurts my lovely ones, I want to hurt them back. Claws and all. Sometimes we have to let go and mourn the loss. I'm not saying this is the case, again, I don't know enough. But your gut is surely trying to talk to you. Listen to what it's got to say. You will survive it all, believe me. I wish you luck with this, and no further heartache. HUGS AND KISSES.

Hi Lioness,

You are infecting me some. I thought of you when I wrote the first sentence. There are some influences from British movies and such, but you're probably the main one. =)

Thank you for your words of support. I'm still trying to decide what to do with this situation, I've given up on people before and I told myself once I would never do that in this case. And it feels like if I give up, I'm not just giving up on his company but giving up a part of myself. It's hard. I'll probably have more posts about this in the future, but they are hard to write.

Thank you again. Your support is wonderful. I wish we lived closer and I could know you IRL.

Hey. Scott is right. Love is not conditional.

However, I'm going to quote an old friend of mine (Becky) when she said "Once you love someone, you always love them. You just may not always like them very much." And it's true. Nothing keeps you from continuing to love him, I still love him. But I'm not overly happy with him. And I don't particularly like him for what he's been doing, or I should say, not doing.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I think you rock and it's not you that's giving up. You have continued to try to reach him. I'll talk to you later.

Little Sister,
You are right about Soctt, he is brilliant. Sometimes he scares me with his brillance, but then again that is why I love him as much as I do. As for you, you are just as brillant and have also earned my respect, devotion, love and above all friendship. I know ho hard this has been for you, and like Dana I also love him, but I do not like the way that he acts. That was the most important, and hard thing for me learn, it wasn't that I was hating him, I was hating his actions. It took a long time for me to realize that, and now that I have, he has felt the loss of a truly great friend, because why would I want to spend time with a person that does not even care if I am there or not? I am glad to hear you say that you are doing better about this, I did not liek seeing how it was tearing you apart. As always, I will always be there for you, and I will never let that waiver. You are my Little Sister, that is soemthing that I hope never changes.
Matt

It has started

Alright, I've posted about being in school. I had a week off from the horrors of statistics and now I'm back into the game, learning about computers and information processing (aka How to use a computer).

I set up my Inbox tonight for class to find my "Professor" posted 32 different things to read. That's a lot. Most of my classes have maybe 7 posts by the teacher the first night.

I'm getting a headache reading all of his posts. He seriously uses four different colors for each sentence and puts EVERYTHING in italics and bold. I can tell this guy is a techie and not an English major.

Besides the upcoming headaches, I think this class will go pretty smoothly. At least, I hope so.

Oh, I may post some more scrapbook pages on Preserving Memories in a bit. Well, since I mentioned it, I will.

Oh, I hate that. I don't mind if you use one different color or bold or maybe both on one or two words to make your point but why on earth would you do it in each sentence? That's crazy. Good luck with the class.

Home Sweet Home

It hit me tonight. After four and 1/2 months, I finally feel at home in my apartment.

This past weekend, I put up some of the artwork I had sitting in the corner collecting dust. I put up four framed items actually. Three of them are Monet prints and they hang on the same wall. On the wall that I see when I open the door, I put a thing my aunt made for me a few Christmases (no clue how to pluralize this) ago. She crocheted my name into a dollie-like thing. Then she matted it and my (former) uncle made a frame for it. The entire thing is handmade and I think of the effort involved to make such a personal gift.

She made three of those items that year, one for me (first name) and two for my cousins with their last names. They are men so that's why they got the last names. Since I'm not married, she felt putting my last name on there wouldn't make it timely. I don't know about that but I like it. And I can't imagine having the space for the ones she made for my cousins. Their last name has 12 letters in it!

It's a good feeling to finally feel settled. Now that I do, I want to actually accomplish a few of the tasks I kept putting off. I still have a few items from unpacking that I have no clue where to put them. I think I need to go through my closet and get rid of a ton of clothing. For a non-girly woman, I have way too many clothes. And shoes! I never had this many shoes in my life! When I was in high school, I owned three pairs of shoes. They were (in order of importance): my tennis shoes, my bowling shoes, and there should be an extremely large gap here, a pair of black heels for dress-up occasions.

I think I have at least 9 pairs of black boots now. That's just black boots. It's crazy! And I don't think I even own a pair of tennis shoes anymore.

Here's another oddity. I don't wear make-up very often. In fact, I usually only wear make-up the same day I buy it. I have a bathroom closet FULL of make-up, most of it used one time. Why? I have no clue. I can honestly say I have never used a tube of lipstick or mascara, an eye-liner pencil, eye shadow, blush, or cover up to the point where it was empty. But I feel strange just throwing it away, unused. Maybe I should just start wearing make-up. But that's a pain. And you can't touch your eyes. I know I shouldn't, but I do end up touching my eyes throughout the day.

One of these days, I'm going to post about what a dweeb I was in high school. There may even be a picture from my senior year with the post.

That's it for tonight. Now onto blogrolling.

Oh, Donovan now has a blog. He's a Republican, but he's a human being too. Check it out: Harleys and Guinness. There's my plug for someone else tonight.

I think that hanging pictures really do make a place more homey. I am guilty of not putting up pictures although I have tons of frames to do so. I remember putting some framed photos in my hallway and could not believe how excited I got to get that homey feeling. I think I procrastinate putting them up because I know I will eventually move but I usually stay put in one place for many years.

As for shoes.....I used to have a lot but lately I am down to a select few. It may have something to do with have a very very casual work enviroment and never going out at night anymore. :-(

Blah, blah, blah.

I'm not feeling creative for a good title tonight. I don't know why.

What a weekend! I had a good couple of days off from work and I feel good. I need to acknowledge when I feel good more often.

When I got off of work Saturday night, I came home (no partying for this girl) and sighed a deep breath of relief that I had no homework due. Yes, I know school is starting again on Wednesday night, but nothing can be a horribly frustrating as statistics was. I have lost every bit of retention from that class already. The good news, I got my grade today. 93.75%. I got an A in the class! Then I paid tuition (ouch!).

On Sunday, I slept SUPER late. Normally, I get up at 1 PM for work. On weekends, I usually get up around 2:30. I must have needed the rest because I went to sleep at 5 AM and woke up at 4:30. That felt so good.

Plans to go to Dana's fell through (we have to do it sometime soon though - don't think Keem and I will forget Dana) but I did pick her up at 9 PM and we went to karaoke. It was a slow evening at the Chalet but I had a blast. Michael was there and he hung out with us. It was his birthday and we wished him lots of happy birthdays. Since it was slow, Bryan, the jovial karaoke host, sang a ton of songs and that made Dana and I quite happy. We all sat around talking politics, music, and movies.

The politics talk was spawned by some comments left on Dana's blog. When I got home from karaoke, I left another comment and I see that Donovan has revisited the site. I appreciate the apology Donovan (if you read this site at all). I look forward to seeing a blog from Donovan, even if he is a Republican. I'd like to hear his thoughts on the issues and see the ideas more concrete. He has every right to voice an opinion and I would like to hear it. I don't know if I'll agree but I'll listen to what he has to say.

I think I slept too late on Sunday and I had troubles falling asleep on Sunday night/Monday morning. It was 7:45 before I think my eyes closed and remained closed. I had gone to bed at 5 AM (typical bedtime for me). I woke up today at 2:30 on the dot. So strange. I know what was keeping me up and I'm working on a post for a different blog about that whole issue, but it will take me a long time to formulate everything I want to say.

I finished up three scrapbooks this weekend (all from one trip to Vegas - yes, I'm insane with the camera). I did a quick post about the new site I set up this weekend, Preserving Memories. It's just pictures of scrapbook layouts I've done. I will probably add more in the future. I started a quick 7 x 7 inch album tonight. It's just some old family photos that I really wanted to get out of the magnetic album. Nothing spectacular.

When school started, I pushed this story/novel aside that Dana "assigned" me to do. I have 31 pages written already and I should get back to it. Once the rough draft is done, I'm going to go back for the re-write. Right now I'm just trying to get the story down on paper (or screen as computers have allowed us to do these days). A story that has been in the back of my head for years resurfaced in my mind this past week. Okay, I had a dream about it again. I don't know what brought it on but I am thinking about it a lot. I should probably just start some notes and when I finish this one, I'll try the new idea. It would take more research and probably be a little harder to write.

Here's the idea for the new story:

A woman falls in love with a foreigner. (Tried, but true!) The circumstances of their meeting are still fuzzy. They are not able to stay together due to geography and such. Back at home, she rekindles a romance from her youth (wow, do I have basis for the characters from my life or what?).

Okay, at this point, I'd say the story is pretty common. Here's the twist (and it's probably been done before): The current boyfriend/husband whatever is called off to war (I'm not sure if this is voluntary or not). The war is against the country where the foreigner lives. The two men end up in battle against each other.

Corny, right? I don't know. I may play with this one for a long time before I ever write anything. I think it's just a fear that I have. I'm not sure what point of view the story would be written from and I don't have a clue what happens to the characters.

So I'm going to dwell on that for awhile and I think I'm going to clean up the disaster zone around my computer. I figure it would be a good idea to organize all this stats junk before I add another class to the pile. Now that I know the class is over and I passed (yea!), I may just recycle some of this stuff instead of keeping it for future reference.

Oh, I got a belated birthday card tonight from my godmother. She sent me a really pretty chain necklace and this totally cute bookmark!

The bookmark has two little African penguins (aka Black-footed penguins and also aka Jackass penguins (they bray like donkeys)) walking on a shoreline. The picture makes it look like they are holding flippers. The quote says, "Friends, A friend at your side makes the journey easier!" It's really cute. I think she got it from the World Wildlife Fund.

Cute bookmark. Are you attempting to steal my blahs? No, you didn't use five so it is okay. I didn't realize Donovan had returned, I'll have to check it out. Last night, after Timber Lodge, I went home and went right to bed. Tired Dana.

Anyway, sleep well (since it is almost 9 AM, I'm assuming you are sleeping) and I'll talk to you later.

Oh, I like the idea for the story. You just need to develop it. And I would read it.

TV

Last night, I decided to turn on the TV. I don't watch much TV, the television usually only comes on in my apartment for about an hour a week.

So I turn on the TV with my remote (mainly for a light to get from the switch to my bed) and there is an infomercial on for an air purifier.

I switched the channel.

At the next station, I found an infomercial for skin care products.

The next channel produced an infomercial for vitamins.

On the fourth try, I found an infomercial for breast enlargement.

I left the TV on the NASA channel, watching the shuttle orbit the Earth. For about two minutes.

There was another channel of a guy complaining that the government is out to get him. That was a little frightening and paranoid.

I turned off the TV and went to sleep.

This is why I don't watch TV.

TV is highly overrated. We don't have cable. The 2 channels that we do get are fuzzy and will give you a headache if you watch for too long. We watch a lot of movies. I think the people at the rental place wonder sometimes why two people who look too young to have two kids (ages 1 and 3) and never seem to have their kids with them when they go to rent the movies are renting adultish type movies (not talking about porn here) but also rent movies for children like Barney and Dora the Explorer and stuff like that.

Apparently the advertising powers that be are targeting those insomniac, conspiracy theory-loving, sci-fi geeks who have bad skin, need to take vitamins and need to breathe better air (which is probably because they are hiding from a) the government or b) the aliens or c) both). Oh, and unfortunately, they have small breasts.

Which is a little frightening because when I think of an insomniac, conspiracy theory-loving sci-fi geek with bad skin and poor health, I usually picture a guy. Which is sexist of me and I should know better. Bad Dana! Bad!

Success!

Last night, I finally finished my scrapbooks from my trip to Las Vegas with Dana last March.

I took pictures of sixteen different pages/layouts and have posted them on a new site. The site is: Preserving Memories. I probably won't update this site too often, just when I finish scrapbook projects. I may add some previous layouts here in the near future.

Let me know what you think!

I will be adding a link on the side one of these days.

Oh I better go and look!!!!!

My First Roommate & First Apartment

I was recently reminded of my first roommate, the girl I shared an apartment with my third year of college at the University of Minnesota.

When I lived in the dorms, I had my own room. This was fantastic. I would study and when I wanted company, I could go two doors down and say hello to friends. One of the girls in my dorm was named Dogwood (not her real name, but she was named after a tree). In a three minute conversation (the longest we ever had up to that point), we decided to become roommates the following year.

This may have been a poor choice.

Dogwood was plain looking, she kept her straight and long. She purchased many of her clothes at second hand stores even though money was not a problem. She was thrifty.

Dogwood did not drive. That's okay, Dana doesn't drive either. She was a huge fan of public transportation (which Dana is in favor of transportation, I just don't think she enjoys public transportation the way Dogwood did).

Dogwood had a boyfriend (I think they're married now) named Robert. Not Bob, not Rob, Robert. It always had to be said in the full name way. He was not a fan of nicknames. Neither was she. They did break up while I lived with her, for about two weeks, I think he needed to sow some wild oats and luckily, I never witnessed him sowing them with her.

When we went apartment searching, we checked out exactly 1 building near campus. This was a mistake.

The apartment we would be renting was still occupied, so we were shown the vacant two room on the third floor. We were lead through the front of the building (to keep us from the back of the building) to a clean, large apartment. The doors were all mahogany and the price was amazing for such space! That should have been a clue. We signed the lease that day.

September 1 came around and it was time to move in. I had my family and a couple of friends helping me and Dogwood had her parents there. As boxes were moved into our apartment (which we got our first views of at the same time our parents did), Dogwood's mother excitedly pointed out how much character the building had! "There are vines growing outside! The space you girls have! Look at this!"

My mother spent two hours crying.

I learned a very valuable lesson the day I walked into the place I would be living for a year. It had to do with apartment searching.

I'm going to explain what had my mom in tears now. Please, don't be afraid. I don't live at this place anymore.

The first thing my mom noticed was that the neighborhood seemed to enjoy the first of each month, watching people move in and out of apartments. The dumpsters were prime targets at the beginning of each month. There were actually 12 people from the neighborhood going through the dumpster next to our building, grabbing couches, chairs, etc.

Then my mother noticed the lock on the back door. Or, should I say, the non-existent lock. She also noticed that the basement (which the stairs were right next to our door) had blankets and clothes all over the place. It seemed that some vagrants enjoyed that space as housing.

My mom sent my dad to the store immediately to buy two chain locks, heavy-duty.

The two boys who had lived in the apartment before us had moved out two weeks before and the apartment was not cleaned by them or by the caretakers. The walls were not repainted (state law) and there was actually an inch of dust under the tub in the bathroom. From the dirt and grime in that apartment, I doubt the place had been cleaned for at least four years.

The bathroom had a stand alone tub. It was "charming". This is according to Dogwood's mom. My mom noticed the cracks in the walls and the water damage all over the bathroom. Then my mom noticed a window in the bathroom. This intrigued her since the bathroom was in the middle of the apartment and all the walls should not have an outside view. Curious as to why the glass was painted over in a poop brown color that did not allow any light, my mom opened the window.

Not a good idea.

As it turned out, there was an air shaft in the middle of the building. I have no clue as to why. I'm not an architect. Dogwood and I lived on the first floor and so what my mother first saw was the accumulation of years of garbage. The only access to this air shaft would be through the windows of the three apartments and it seemed that numerous tenants were too lazy to take their trash out to the dumpsters. No, it was much more convenient to dump it out the window into the pit of despair.

After deep hitching sobs subsided, my mom set forth on trying to clean the layers of grim away from the sinks in the bathroom and the kitchen. My dad looked at the refrigerator in the kitchen and two days later showed up with a new one that he bought. When I moved out, the new refrigerator went home with him and the caretakers got to put the old one back into the place. The reason to remove the other fridge from our apartment, besides the fact it seemed to be leaking coolant on the floor, was the pure filth of the machine. It was extremely tiny for a fridge and the new one doubled the storage space while cutting the energy needed in half.

During my year at this apartment building, I paid for a parking spot in the back. With my night life schedule, I would come home to find that the caretakers did not monitor the cars in the lot and I rarely had a spot left to put my car. The question became, who do you complain to at 3 in the morning? I created my own spot. I parked on the grass and the caretakers did not fight me on this one, AT ALL.

Now that I've explained the living arrangements provided by my rent check each month, I think it's time to move onto Dogwood and the experience of living with her.

When we moved in, I went and bought food. Did she? No. She ate my food. I had to buy more food. And she ate that too. Becoming frustrated, I went and bought lots of meat and nothing else. Did she eat it? No. Success! I lived with a vegetarian. The only way for me to have food left over to eat was to only purchase meat products.

I ate a lot of bacon and steak during that year. And I drank a lot of Coca-Cola. (Eventually, I was hanging out at Bugs (the pool hall) often enough and going out with the Bugs crew that I ate healthier at local all-night restaurants and had no need to eat at home. It was expensive, but it was less than buying food that I wouldn't get a chance to eat.)

Dogwood and I had quite different ideas for decorating the apartment. I tend to go for modern, sleek, natural wood colors, and black appliances. Looking around my current apartment, I see crystal on glass shelves, lots of pictures in frames (although not as many as there were before), black iron escalerras, and penguins. My bookshelves and DVD racks are wood and so is my desk. My chairs are black leather. There's no rhyme or reason to my decorating but that's my next project. The artwork I have is Monet paintings, this awesome spray paint picture I bought in Vegas, and movie posters. That's what I like.

Imagine my surprise to come home from class one day to find the living room transported into a different dimension.

Now, a couple of the pieces of work were okay, but I really didn't want to live in a cartoon gallery. I didn't put any artwork or posters up in the common living area. I figured it would be a "free" zone. I guess the charactures were not as odd as what I found sitting on top of my DVD rack.

There was a head. A glass head.

No body. No color. Not even a hat. Just a head.

This went against all sense of logic I have. I think of it now and I am lost in confusion.

Eventually (my night shift helped with this), Dogwood and I were on completely different schedules. I think I managed to see her twice in a seven month period. Then summer came and I never saw her again.

I have a story about Dogwood I will share in a moment, but I first need to explain how much she didn't contribute to the expenses of sharing an apartment. When we moved in, I also bought toilet paper. I bought one of those mega-packs that last for 2 months. When it got low, I figured she would supply the next package. It got closer and closer to the last roll, so I went and bought more toilet paper. Another two months go by. I bought another package of toilet paper that I kept in my room to test a theory. When I needed to use the bathroom, I brought the TP in there with me. I didn't store it in there.

Now, when there was toilet paper, she used it. I know this because I would be gone (back home) for the weekends and the rolls would deplete. When I no longer provided the TP in the bathroom, there was none. She never replaced any.

I have no clue how she wiped her ass for 8 months of our lease. None. I'm so very afraid.

The story about Dogwood I think I should share is about our first evening in the apartment. After we had unloaded some of the boxes and everyone left, her and I went to play pool at Bugs with another friend of mine, Naynay. I'm not all that creative for her name right now so I'll use the horrible pet name her boyfriend gave her.

The three of us went to Bugs.

To move in and do heavy lifting, my choice of clothing was sturdy tennis shoes (this was before my big, black boots days), a pair of jeans, and a t-shirt. For some odd reason, Dogwood, aka the hippie who loved communal living and mooching off of others, decided a dress would be the best choice for moving.

I don't check out women's asses so I did not notice this. One of the regulars from Bugs told me about this and I'm so horrified by my former roommate that the thought makes me shudder.

Dogwood was still wearing the dress that was short in length. It was her idea to go play pool (I know this is surprising, but it was her idea). While we were playing, she made her shots and leaned over the table to make them.

There were quite a few tables of men who got a good show that night at Bugs.

That's right, she was not wearing any form of underwear. She didn't even have on hosiery.

So, looking back, I can say that I may be liberal, but I'm not a damn hippie. I met a hippie. I lived with a hippie.

Oh, Dogwood wanted to pose for Playboy. Odd connection, her father worked for the men's magazine for years and while I was reading a book by a certain author this past summer, the author mentioned getting a denial letter from my former roommate's father. Strange connections.

After meeting her and her family, I can say, "Drugs are bad."

My mom was thrilled when I moved home that summer. I don't blame her. I learned a lot from that year.

Oh, my God. I remember you telling me about Dogwood and thinking she was a flake but I don't remember all of this. This is crazy. Yikes.

I'm so glad you got out of that and are now living with a nice, normal person, yourself.

I've had some crazy roommates as well but this is amazing.

Anyway, back to work. I had fun last night. Talk to you later.

Think Pink! I came across this photo tonight while I was finishing up the journaling in my last two Vegas albums. All the pages are done and ready to put into an album! These flowers just seem so happy and I liked the thought. For those wondering, scrapbooking kept me from blogging tonight but there is a post in progress to be coming this weekend regarding a former roommate of mine. Don't worry, it's a funny post.

Little Sister,
I love this photo, it is amazing to look at. You have a terrific eye for detail when it comes to pictures and you really captured it here. I know this from seeing it in person, but I remember looking at this photo and wondering if I might be able to reach out and actually feel the vevlety softness of the petals. It is one of my favorite photos from Vegas.

What does this mean?

I started listening to a song recently and I'm completely confused by the lyrics. They are just a little, what's the word?, weird.

The song is "Like a Rock" by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. I like Bob Seger and I enjoy the music. I've written before about how this song makes me want to buy a truck (Chevy commercials), but the lyrics are strange.

Here they are (notes in italic):

Like a Rock
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

Stood there boldly
Sweatin' in the sun
Felt like a million
Felt like number one
The height of summer
I'd never been that strong
Like a rock

Okay, makes sense so far. The guy felt strong, rocks are solid. That makes some sense. I guess there are millions of rocks too. I'm not sure about a number one rock, but I'm willing to go a little farther.

I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

Well, rocks don't seem to care. I'm not sure where money is involved, but I do get that rocks are solid. Some might be lean. Some are not lean. Some are big boulders.

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Okay, getting a little disenchanted here. Rocks don't walk. If rocks did walk, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't walk "quick and light". They are rocks! The holding firmly to what is right is something I can kind of see being a rock quality because they don't move, so I'll keep going.

Like a rock, I was as strong as I could be
Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me
Like a rock, I was something to see
Like a rock

I'm with you for the strong and that nothing gets you down. Those make sense for rocks. Something to see? What are you, Mount Rushmore? I don't think of too many rocks where I'm just overjoyed to go, "Look! A rock! Don't you see?" Unless you're pretending it's a seed. Hmmm.

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams

Now, I like the imagery here, but I'm not familiar with too many rocks that are "arrow straight". Who hustles rocks? Most rocks (unless you mean a mountain) are not "high above it all". Do rocks dream? I didn't think so.

Twenty years now
Where'd they go?
Twenty years
I don't know
I sit and I wonder sometimes
Where they've gone

Rocks don't really care about twenty years. Twenty years is not a long span of time for a rock! Oh, the artist is telling us that he's feeling old and that he wasted twenty years. Yeah, that's the ticket.

And sometimes late at night
When I'm bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin' a ghostly white
And I recall
I recall

I like the line, "When I'm bathed in the firelight". It doesn't pertain to a rock and it's just a neat image.

Like a rock, standin' arrow straight
Like a rock, chargin' from the gate
Like a rock, carryin' the weight
Like a rock

What? How do rocks charge from a gate? Wouldn't this be a bull? Rocks are inanimate objects. They only move when another force causes some inertia in them. This line may cause more damage to my logic than all the others.

Like a rock, the sun upon my skin
Like a rock, hard against the wind
Like a rock, I see myself again
Like a rock

These are pretty good smilies. I hope the artist meant that he sees himself as a rock and not that rocks check themselves out in mirrors. Then they would be narcissistic rocks. And that's not good.

Narcissitic rocks....I love it. I think it is sorta humororus how people that are narcissitic seem to be rock heads, do you think this is a coincindence? Perhaps we should do a study into it........

A Word That's Been On My Mind

No further explanation will be given:

nar-cis-sism: n. self-love; specif., excessive interest in one's own appearance, etc.

That's from Webster's New World Dictionary.

nar-cis-sism: n. 1. Excessive love or admiration for oneself. See Synonyms at conceit. 2. A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem. 3. Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development. 4. I love words. They are so great. Narcissism comes from the legend of Narcissus, a young man who was so enthralled with his own beauty that he died, staring at his reflection.

Pretty fitting.

*Sticking tongue out of corner of mouth*

I just wrote a horribly depressing post that I'm not going to publish. I didn't mean for it to turn depressing, it's just what happened.

I do want to share a link with anyone reading. Check out: BNL Blog. The picture at the top shows my mood about this election perfectly. It's no wonder why I adore Stephen Page. I liked what he wrote (scroll to the last post on the page) on Halloween.

To the world, there are Americans who care and don't think the election results are what everyone wanted. Remember, almost half of the country said no to "four more years". There are still voices in the crowd, screaming for change.

On a good note, my statistics class is OVER!!! This is fantastic! I feel as if a huge boulder is no longer hanging over my head, waiting to drop and crush me. I made it. I finished my final, I posted my last assignment, and I'm done with statistics. Thank you! Now I'm just hoping I did well on the final and I am hoping for an A in this class. I don't know if that will happen, but I'm hoping.

I went out to Perkin's tonight with Matt. That was fun. It was a celebration for the end of stats. Yea! I had a good time, as always. I am looking forward to Friday night and the meeting of the Sheepsheadians.

I'll probably have a couple more posts tonight and they're just short and probably won't have much explanation. One will be a definition of a word and the other will be funnier, a break down of an odd song.

That's all for this post.

One More Day

I know the clock is showing that it is technically November 3, but to me, it's still Tuesday. That's because of the life schedule I keep. I never consider it the next day until I go to sleep.

Wednesday, November 3, 2004 is the last day of my horrible statistics class.

Now, I like math. I do. I don't like stats. I have more paper sitting around my computer in a jumbled mess and I actually got so frustrated tonight doing my final that I just sat and cried for twenty minutes. Yes, that's right, I freaked out because of stats.

I think I only have four questions left to the final and then my final weekly summary to post. I did some strange calculations for the team project that I don't get. I have no idea why the number of teachers and the enrollment of students in some school district in California is important. But they seem to be related by the number 9. Who knew?

I still have no clue what that means.

If my final wasn't 15% of my grade, I think I'd just skip it. But then my internal motivation kicks in and tells me, "Beth, you KNOW you can't do that." And it's right. I can't. But I want to. Isn't that enough?

No, I guess it isn't.

I think my final summary is going to consist of: I don't get this at all. I hate stats. I understood the problems while I was doing them but the retention is gone. Don't test me. Please.

I bet my teacher wouldn't appreciate that much.

I could have one heck of a bonfire from all the paper I had to print from this class. I think I went through about $100 worth of ink for my printer. That sucks. I would have rather purchased the stupid textbook.

So, my next course, that starts 11/11, is Computers and Information Processing. From the catalog: This course introduces the fundamentals of computer systems and the role of information processing in today's business environment. An overview is presented of information systems, systems development, operating systems and programming, database management, networking and telecommunications, and the Internet.

One of the objectives of the class is to identify the hardware of a computer.

We go to school online!!! I hope to God everyone in this next class knows what a monitor and a CPU are. I'm hoping this next class will be a little easier than stats. It has to be. Nothing can be worse than stats. Except maybe brain surgery.

Ah, crap. The book is one that I can download again. I hate that. I need to go buy ink for my printer. Yucka.

I'm going to be celebrating the end of this headache class. I think that's the only thought that will help me through this final. (Which I'll probably turn in late. Ug!)

I'm going to bed. I'm grumpy and I'm having a crap-tacular week. At least work is going well and I'm looking forward to Friday night with the Sheepsheadians.

Procrastinating

I really, really should be doing homework. I have my final for statistics sitting next to me, taunting me with it's five questions. I could do this. I should do this. Do I do this? No. I blog.

I've been staring at a website for most of the night, watching the different states come in with their election results. The news has declared Ohio going to Bush right now and even if Kerry wins all the remaining states, it will only tie. In that case, the House gets to vote and it is in Republican power.

Let me just say, I'm sad. At least I voted, I made my voice heard and I live in a state that went Democratic yet again (last time Minnesota didn't go for the Democrat was in 1972).

I can say I'm worried, just as I have been for the last four years. It seems the country has spoken and chosen a man for president. It's just not the man I would choose.

I took a test to see where my views matched the candidates. I came up 87% Kerry, 13% Bush. Risking being insulted, I just want to say I don't like Dubya. I don't. He scares me.

I look back on where I was four years ago and where I am today. Four years ago, I voted for Al Gore because I am pro-choice. That's really the reason I voted for him. And I liked where our country was.

What do I see today? I see our country in a war because of personal vendettas. Yes, 9/11 was a tragedy, but that didn't have anything to do with Iraq. Hey, let's go after a country and leader because it was US who gave them the technology and help to create WMD that don't exist. Let's see our young men and women killed "defending" their country. Let's go kill innocent people because, hey, we don't understand what's going on.

It doesn't matter what the reason for the war is. I will honestly say that war is one of the most heart-wretching things I can imagine.

Did the war sway my vote this year? No. It didn't.

Did the fear that Dubya's campaign forced on Americans sway my vote this year? No. Again, it didn't.

I mentioned before that I'm pro-choice. Did the fact that 4 Supreme Court justices may retire during this term and the Roe vs Wade decision could be overturned? No. It actually didn't.

Did the fact our country has gone from a surplus to the largest deficit in history sway my vote? No. It didn't. (Although I really am afraid how we could get out of a 100-year deficit and then top it in just 4 years! Oh, wait, let's wage a war.)

None of those reasons are why I got up and headed to the polls this afternoon. I voted because of one issue close to my heart.

I voted because of the Marriage Protection Amendment. I am thankful this was shot down by both the House and the Senate, but I'm still afraid it will resurface after the election has wound down.

I voted because I believe that ALL HUMANS are created EQUAL. We should all have the same rights.

There are two sites worth checking out. They are:
Million for Marriage
Someone You Know is Gay

I've signed both of these sites.

The issue of gay marriage and homosexuality is one that I cared about even before I knew anyone who was gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transsexual. I care about the issue just as I care about equal rights for all minorities. I care about Human Rights for All Humans.

And watching the results of the election, I am afraid. On so many levels.

That's what I'm feeling tonight.

The Waiting Game

I did it. I got up early (for me at least) and made it to the polls.

All the hype made me conscious of long lines at the polls so I arrived with an hour and a half of time to vote. It took exactly 3 minutes. And that's just because there were a lot of little ovals to fill in. There was absolutely no line when I got there.

So I came home and I'm killing 45 minutes (school work is also included in this time) that I could have been sleeping.

Does anyone think we'll even know the results tonight? I highly doubt it.

One person told me that Florida will probably take at least 3 days to give the results up.

I am just hoping.

Okay, I know it's political, but it's a fun joke. My mom told me this one:

What's the difference between Vietnam and Iraq?

Bush had a plan to get out of Vietnam.

I hope we know the results in the next day (which I doubt). I hope my vote counts.

Halloween Karaoke (and an update to THE BOY)

Note: There are links in this post to pictures. I did not want to overload anyone's browser so they are actually on a different site.

Imagine this conversation, a few weeks ago:

"What should we do for Halloween?"

"Halloween is on a Sunday."

"Oh, then that's decided. We'll go to karaoke. Duh!"

And that is where the evening began.

There were costumes galore (although not everyone was in costume).

Dana came as The Queen of the Universe. Bryan figured out what Dana's costume was right away. Everyone just accepts that she's the queen of the universe. She did have a frog prince named Green Day with her and there will be pictures of him too.

Bryan came as a hungover karaoke host. I guess the huge party was actually Saturday night. That is an under garment on his head.

Keem was a magical sorceress. Doesn't Keem look pretty? I think this is a good picture of Keem!

Matt was insane. What else is new? (Just kidding Matt. But seriously, if you question Matt's sanity, read his blog and there will no longer be a doubt. That man is crazy!)

Big Wayne came as a giant. It's pretty easy when he's known as being 11 feet tall.

Bobby came as a water pouring god. It's better live, but finally, a picture of this wonderful event!

And me? I just wanted to wear my go-go boots so I came as Beth in Go-Go Boots (or a Go-Go dancer, but since I don't really dance, this doesn't work so well). The picture has some red eyes, maybe I was a devil go-go dancer.

There was a slight crisis during the evening when the Coca-Cola ran out. Bobby was my hero when the two-liters showed up.

It wouldn't be karaoke without singing. And there was lots!

Dana and Matt pleased the crowd with a rendition of Summer Nights from Grease. It was a punishment that Keem forced on Dana. Matt just sang along. He's great that way. It's odd to see my father (Dana) and my brother singing a song about making out and dating. If you are confused about Dana being my dad, read this.

Matt also poured his heart and soul into a wonderful song. He sang us lots of songs and I know I've posted this type of picture before, but Matt's passion when he sings, "With a Little Help From My Friends" is worth repeating.

Dana's date sure gets around. The Queen of the Universe brought Green Day, the Frog Prince, as her date to Halloween karaoke. First, Green Day was found dancing with Dana. There was a fight over Green Day's affections and I'm still unsure who won.

The man who does nothing that can be defined as dainty sang a wonderful song. Froggy Love was a huge hit.

We had a wonderful time hanging out together at karaoke, laughing was the norm. Smiles were shared and soda was consumed.

Is that all? Oh, I guess I forgot to add the update about THE BOY. I think I'm just tired of thinking about it.

Where to start?

Okay, I've written about my fear of bugs before. The Wasp, The Bees, and The Cricket. Category to come. Well, I was going to link these stories, but I seem to have no access to July archives. This is bothering me. I'll have to see if I can fix that later.

I hate bugs. They scare me. What does this have to do with karaoke? You'll see.

When we get to karaoke, there is this young woman sitting by herself in the back of the bar. It looked like she was studying or something. Here's the thing. She was there a couple of weeks ago (when THE BOY sang the Kiss song). On that particular Sunday, I had to look at this girl six times before I was sure she was female. I know that sounds mean, but it's true. It's the old cliche, is that a woman or a man? She looks like a bug. Before anything happened at karaoke that night, we were already calling her the Bug Lady. Dana thinks she looks like a praying mantis. I agree.

When the night was getting late, the door opened and the friend of THE BOY walked in with two women. THE BOY was not with the trio. Disappointment started to set in.

One of the women got up to dance to Play That Funky Music, courtesy of Big Wayne. She saw me table dancing (or chair dancing - pick a term for sitting in your chair, getting down to the boogie). She made me get up and dance. Then THE BOY's friend (whom I'm now going to start calling Pete, just so I don't have to type THE BOY's friend anymore) got up to dance with us. He kept looking at me strange. Like he wanted to say something, but didn't know what or how. I gave Dana the "Help me God! eye" and she came up to dance with us. Bryan had this look of fear on his face to see Dana and I actually up and dancing (I don't blame him, we usually mock the dancers).

Why did I get up to dance? Great question. I didn't want to look like a bitch in front of Pete because he might tell THE BOY I was unwilling to dance with his girlfriend. Yes, this is insane.

Dana told me tonight that while we were dancing, Pete told her, "THE BOY (he used the real name of course) won't be up here because I'm an ass." I have no clue what that means.

The song ended and we headed back to our seats. Pete got up a few more times to dance with this girl he brought in and they were definitely an item. So that threw out the theory that Pete was interested in the Bug Lady. (I don't think I explained that. THE BOY and Pete talked with the Bug Lady a couple of weeks ago during the football game. No touching ever happened.)

This post is getting long. Sorry.

So we got Pete making out with the girl and the Bug Lady sitting by herself in the corner. We have our table laughing and singing and just having fun and we also have Beth wearing go-go boots and the bra from hell.

Bryan sits by me and says, "Your lover's friend just came in with women." I smiled at the thought of THE BOY and then thought about asking Bryan when he became a 12-year old boy. Bryan said, "But they don't have those boots." So that made me feel good.

Well, I was convinced THE BOY was going to be karaoke-less another week when all of a sudden the door opened and the man who has been filling my dreams walked in. God, he's cute (at least I think so). I looked over, smiled, and then watched him go over and sit by the Bug Lady.

What the hell happened????

Deep breath.

I got called up to sing and I decided to bring out the big guns (pointless) and sang a lustful song (What Would Happen by Meredith Brooks), hoping it would grab THE BOY's attention, since he isn't touching the Bug Lady, maybe they're just friends. Yeah, I can try to believe that.

What happens while I'm singing about What Would Happen? Pete and THE BOY start a minor tiff and seem to make up because THE BOY and the Bug Lady join Pete's table.

THE BOY does get up to sing and I'm looking right at him and he never even makes eye contact or acknowledges me. It was as if my boots created an invisible shield and he couldn't see me.

On a plus, he did point at Dana and compliment her stars. I think the comment was, "Niiiicccce."

I even tried saying hello and nothing.

So, I think it's over before it ever began. I'm really confused right now.

Oh, Dana did manage to get a couple pictures of THE BOY. Let me know what you think.

I'm still frustrated and now very confused. My hopes are not as high as they were three weeks ago. That's THE BOY update.

I still had a wonderful time at karaoke. It's great each and every single week.

Oof. Shame. I can't understand it. Maybe he's shy???

LOVED the pics. Your boots are S.E.X.Y. I want to have DM's teeth. Can that be done?

Lioness, why would you want my teeth? They are scary and yellow with lots and lots of plague (yes, I know it's plaque but I like typing both words) because dentists hate me.

THE BOY is stupid. Or, otherwise, under a mystical spell that the Bug Woman has cast. Seriously, if I can find bat sonar, I'll bring in a recording of it in next week and we'll play it and her nervous system will go kablooey (Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference - The praying mantis lady that was after Xander). Because, yeah, she sure doesn't have your boots. Or your personality. Or smile. Or charm. Or your friends. So there. Which was really mature but I don't care. Stupid Bug Woman.

Well, your teeth look lovely and white from where I'm seeing them. let's wait and see what the boy does. Maybe he'll prove worth it. Maaaaybe.

A crazy woman's lament

Blink, blink, no light, blink.

This is what my modem is doing right now. I can’t blog. I can’t read blogs. I can’t do my homework at my school that is ONLINE.

I know it’s not my computer. No, it’s the fact that my cable provider is having network issues and I’m sitting here after work, wanting, no wait, NEEDING to go online.

I have to get three essay questions done for school tonight and I can’t get to the classroom to do them without the Internet.

I really wanted to check my email and that’s not working.

I have realized just how dependent on my modem I truly am. It scares me. It’s like Comcast (the cable provider) knows the control they have over me and they are tormenting me now.

I’m not calling the company to complain. I know what that is like for customer service representatives. They can’t do anything anyway.

And yet the blinking light on the modem (the one that stays solid when the network is working) taunts me with it’s blinking.

Blink, blink, blink.

It’s like an eye opening and closing, peaking at me, waiting to see what I’ll do.

And sometimes, it sleeps. The light will stop flashing for about a minute, all of the modem dark.

I don’t know how many games of Spider solitaire I can play before I go completely insane. Hey, I’m already treating an inanimate object like it is alive, I’m close.

****

So I got frustrated and called the cable company. I spoke to this woman who told me that they were having server problems earlier tonight, but not now. Then she made me turn my computer on and off a couple of times. After that didn’t work, she told me that she needed to send a technician out to my site. I questioned this.

She put me on hold to check for technicians and then came back to ask me if my TV worked. Since I hardly watch TV, I had no clue if it did. It didn’t.

Then she told me that it was probably a problem with my cable company. I asked her, "Aren’t you with them?"

Her reply, "No."

Okay. "Well, then I’m supposed to call Comcast?"

Her: "Yes."

Me: "Alright."

"Have a good night. Thanks for calling Comcast."

****

So I call Comcast, the TV division. The guy was really nice and I shouldn’t be mad. I’m not mad at him. No, just frustrated.

The server is not down; it has nothing to do with my computer or my set up. No, he thinks someone ran over the connection outside.

That’s right, some dip ran over my cable and now I can’t do my homework for class. I can’t read blogs and I guess I can’t even watch TV (like I was going to).

I guess this is a better answer than the woman before. I forgot to share the first excuse I got. "Well, with the time change, maybe something happened." What the heck does that mean? Doesn’t the time change twice a year?

I miss my Internet. I do. I don’t know how much solitaire I can play.

I am just hoping it gets fixed before the appointment I have for Monday. Yes, that’s right, I had to schedule a guy to come out and fix it. Hopefully enough neighbors complain and they fix it sooner.

Crap!

****

I forgot to add that the guy I spoke to said that he would credit my account for the inconvenience. He’s giving me a day’s worth of service. That totals $1.82. Wow. I’m so impressed.

The guy asked me if I knew anyone who I could use their computer. I replied, "It’s two in the morning. And that’s with the extra hour. No, no there’s no one awake right now."

Then he asked me if I knew a priest.

I don’t know why. Maybe I imagined that. It just seemed so real.

****

An hour has passed. I am driving myself insane.

Does anyone out there watch The Kids in the Hall? The guy Bruce, he does this weird face with his tongue sticking out and this blank look in his eyes. I was doing that for awhile. No reason.

I was sitting here, waiting patiently before for the modem to work, and I thought, who, who, who wrote the book of love?

Is there a book of love? How come I haven’t read it? Maybe it would help with my love life.
I have lost it. Completely.

*Do a little dance! It was a teenage wedding and the old folks wished them well.

I heard today that someone is protesting Halloween because it is mean to witches. The witches don’t care.

****

Worlds are converging and the universe is tilting off its axis. My mom just called me. At 3 in the morning. My mom is never awake after 9 PM.

She told me that Ben Affleck sucks. I’m not sure why.

She also told me a wonderful story about Taco, our dog. He is getting older and he doesn’t run and bark anymore. In his sleep, he makes noises and she can tell he’s dreaming. She thinks he’s running and barking and chasing and playing in his dreams. He wakes up happy and ready to cuddle with Mommie. It made me smile.

Then she told me to vote against a fee thing in Fridley. I have no clue what she’s talking about.
I’m still going crazy, but at least I’m not my mom crazy yet.

Night Two of Internet Free Lifestyle

I feel Amish. I’m not. I have electricity at least. Homework and No Internet make Beth something, something.

"Go crazy?"

Don’t mind if I do!

****

I went to karaoke tonight. That will be it’s own post. Lots of pictures. And Keem came!

My computer is on crack. Something strange just happened with Word and it told me that I misspelled the work hair. I typed it as hair. Not hiar or anything weird. It’s just strange. I was making a note about what I did to my hair tonight for karaoke (again, see next post).

I should clean my apartment or something. I have a headache though.

I watched a movie to take my mind off the computer. I want my Internet back. I am reminded of that old video for the song about MTV. I don’t remember the name of the song or the group. I would look it up, but of course, NO INTERNET!

I am dreading Monday night. If my computer doesn’t start working soon, I am going to be forced to spend hours upon hours in that stupid program for class. I will be so happy on Wednesday when this class is over. I get to take some odd class that sounds like, "How to use the Internet" starting November 11.

Here’s to hoping I wake up to find my modem working.

****

Update: My modem didn’t work when I got up. I waited a couple of hours and the cable guy showed up. He told me that Comcast did an audit and accidentally disconnected my connection instead of someone else’s. My teacher was none too happy with this explanation, but what am I to do?

I should call Comcast and complain. Maybe I could get more than $1.82 out of them.

At least my Internet is back. I’m doing tons of homework right now and the karaoke post will come soon (along with a ton of pictures).

Pretty, pretty Internet

Ah, finally! My Internet connection is back!

When I got home from work on Saturday night, my modem was blinking. The connection for my modem and my cable TV was gone!

The guy just left and I ran to my computer. I will post some updates in a bit (at least Word was working during the weekend) and I'm going to read all the other blogs in a bit. I have to get some homework done that I couldn't do without my modem all weekend. I'm now behind in class.

Ug!

But the pretty Internet is back. All is good.
